On Friday 20 March a partial total eclipse will be visible in the UK between 8:25 and 10:40 am, when the Moon will cover about 85% of the Sun.
While not as spectacular as a total solar eclipse, it will still cause a slight dimming of the sunlight. The eclipse is a potential hazard for eyesight, particularly if viewed with filters not specifically made for solar observation. Unsafe filters include sunglasses, CDs and films. Observing the eclipse without appropriate protection, or with protection not designed for Sun observation, will cause permanent damage to the eyes. The damage does not cause pain, so it is especially dangerous as the body does not have the usual warning. We therefore suggest you warn your children about it. Proper protection can be found for example at this link: http://www.harrisontelescopes.co.uk/cgi-bin/ss000001.pl?page=search&SS=eclipse+solar+glasses&ACTION=Go%21&PR=-1&TB=A Unfortunately a full school observation is impractical. Therefore only a few selected boys from the 6th form will document the event for the school.
